GTA 6 vs GTA 5: Every Major Difference Before Launch
GTA 6 vs GTA 5 compared: Leonida vs Los Santos, Jason and Lucia vs three leads, 6-star wanted level, smarter police, weapon limits, price and platforms.

GTA 6 is not a bigger GTA 5. It swaps Los Santos for the state of Leonida, three protagonists for two, and a 5-star wanted level for 6. It also runs only on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. It launches on November 19, 2026, and the Standard Edition costs $79.99.
Below, every difference is grouped by what changes once you pick up the controller. A lot of the most interesting changes come from previews and single reports rather than Rockstar, so each section is clear about what is official and what isn't.

Setting and map: Leonida vs San Andreas

GTA 5's San Andreas is Los Santos, a satirical take on Los Angeles, plus Blaine County with its beaches, mountains and desert. GTA 6 moves to the fictional state of Leonida, which Rockstar describes as covering Vice City, swamps, beaches, rural areas and multiple towns.
Vice City, inspired by modern Miami, sits at the center of the map. Around it, Rockstar's material names the Grassrivers (an Everglades-style area), the Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. One source lists the island chain as Leonida Quays, but the official name is Leonida Keys. The trailers also show a Ferris wheel, an arena and a cruise ship as landmarks.
How much bigger is it?
Several creators report that Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA 5's map. One source puts GTA 5's map at just under 75 square kilometers. Two sources call Leonida the largest world in Rockstar's history. These figures are reported, not official.
Interiors: the biggest change to how the city feels
In GTA 5, most houses were facades, and you couldn't walk into restaurants, diners or fast food joints. Reports say GTA 6 has more than 700 explorable interiors, including motels, restaurants, nightclubs, pawn shops and malls. One of those reports notes that Rockstar hasn't officially confirmed the fully enterable interiors. What Rockstar has shown is that building windows now reveal detailed rooms behind them, with plants, curtains and light fixtures instead of GTA 5's flat window textures.
Nature and wildlife
GTA 5 had wildlife, but Rockstar shows GTA 6's wetlands packed with far more animals, including flocks of flamingos and alligators. One report counts more than 170 animal species. The water is transparent from above, and the sea hides coral reefs and marine life such as sea turtles. Vegetation is far denser than in GTA 5. Airboats are shown crossing the swamp waterways, according to one source citing Rockstar footage.
Protagonists: two leads instead of three

GTA 5 was the first GTA to give you several playable protagonists, letting you switch between Michael, Franklin and Trevor mid-mission. GTA 6 narrows that to Jason and Lucia, a couple in a Bonnie and Clyde inspired story. Rockstar's premise: an easy score goes wrong, and the two get caught in a criminal conspiracy where they have to rely on each other to survive.
Reports give their full names as Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Jason is reportedly ex-military, and Lucia comes from Liberty City, where her father taught her to fight. She is also seen walking out of jail in a trailer. Several outlets point out that Lucia is the first female protagonist to lead a GTA game.
Switching works differently too. According to several creators, you can swap between the two during a car chase, with one driving while the other shoots. One source says switching is noticeably faster and smoother than GTA 5's transition sequence. Reports describe a slow-motion targeting ability for Jason that highlights enemy weak spots. One source mentions a single-shot slow-motion mode for Lucia.
Police and the wanted system
This is officially settled: GTA 6's wanted meter goes up to 6 stars, compared with 5 in GTA 5. The bigger changes come from previews and haven't been detailed by Rockstar.
- No more psychic cops. In GTA 5, patrol cars spawned in your blind spots and knew where you were via the minimap's vision cones. In GTA 6, one preview says a crime is only reported when a passer-by reaches for a phone, a witness flees or CCTV catches you. It also says police have to physically drive to the scene instead of appearing instantly.
- Suspect descriptions. Two sources describe a Heat system in which police build a description of your appearance, clothing, mask and getaway car.
- Ways to shake a manhunt. Changing cars or clothes out of sight can reportedly end a search. Pay & Spray is also reported to return for repainting a car mid-chase.
- Criminal Profile. One report describes a profile that tracks how professionally or violently you commit crimes across the whole game, and that doesn't reset like stars. The same source compares it to Red Dead Redemption 2's honor system, except it doesn't sort your behavior into good or evil.
Combat and heists
GTA 5 let you carry an unlimited arsenal, with only the active weapon visible on your character. GTA 6 restricts how many weapons you can carry, according to seven independent sources. One report puts the limit at two rifles and two pistols, with no dual-wielding. Another says you can store weapons in your vehicle's trunk.
Crouching is reportedly new to the series for combat and movement. One source notes that GTA 5's characters couldn't crouch that low without using cover. Prone is less clear. A single source citing Rockstar lists prone crawling, zip ties and human shields. Another single report claims the prone stealth seen in the 2022 leaks was cut from the final build, leaving only crouching. Shooting while lying prone remains a rumor. The Rockstar-sourced claim is the stronger one, but treat prone as unconfirmed until launch.
Other reported combat changes:
- Characters dash to the nearest available cover automatically.
- Rear-seat passengers can lean out and fire assault rifles.
- Store clerks and owners can pull guns and fight back during robberies.
- Robberies start by putting on a mask from the inventory.
- Shooting out the tires of a moving car can make it spin out and flip.
- Molotovs stay unlit until thrown, unlike GTA 5's permanently burning rag.
One source citing Rockstar footage says you can carry visible loot bags during heists and robberies. The same kind of source says explosions take vehicle weight into account, flipping light cars while armored ones stay planted.
Driving and vehicles
Previews describe a heavier, more grounded feel. One report says handling is heavier than in GTA 5, and you can't steer an overturned car back onto its wheels. Another claims roads are about 15% narrower than in GTA V. Thunderstorms and hurricanes reportedly affect handling and tyre grip.
| Feature | Status |
|---|---|
| 200+ vehicles with interactive interiors | Per one source citing Rockstar |
| Working side-mirror reflections | Shown by Rockstar |
| Wipers that run in the rain | Shown by Rockstar |
| Brighter headlights with road reflections | Shown by Rockstar |
| Lowered suspension, custom rims and paint | Per one source citing Rockstar |
| Turn signals that follow your GPS route | Reported |
| Slim jim break-ins instead of smashing windows | Reported |
| WAINK app showing car value, lock type and alarm | Reported, one source |
| Gas stations and EV charging stations | Reported, one source |
| Convertible roofs that open while driving | Reported, one source |
| Circuit racing, including a Sebring-style track | Reported, one source |
Taxis are reportedly replaced by RydeMe, a rideshare app on your phone that also works as fast travel. One source citing Rockstar footage shows an elevated monorail running through the city.
Side activities and world simulation
Rockstar's list of side activities covers the gym, boxing and MMA, fishing, hunting, pool, snooker, mini-golf, basketball, scuba diving, kayaking, jet skiing, dirt bike racing, clubbing and community service. Hunting and fishing come over from Red Dead Redemption 2, according to several sources.
That RDR2 influence runs through the reported features. According to previews, GTA 6 moves away from GTA 5's arcade-style play and borrows depth from Red Dead Redemption 2. Reported examples include:
- An RDR2-style NPC interaction menu with dialogue options
- Petting, scolding or studying dogs
- Bodies that change with lifestyle, so eating affects weight and exercise builds muscle
- Hair that doesn't grow on its own, unlike in RDR2
One source citing Rockstar describes NPCs who react in different ways: running away, filming you on their phones, fighting back or ignoring you. Reports put the NPC animation count above 600,000, compared with about 55,000 in GTA 5 and about 300,000 in RDR2.
Story length
One report says GTA 6's main story plus some side missions takes about 80 hours, against about 51.5 hours for GTA 5. The GTA 5 numbers vary by source because they measure different things. One source says most players finish GTA 5's story in around 30 hours, and full completion takes about 89.5 hours. Either way, the 80-hour figure for GTA 6 is a single report, not a Rockstar number.
Graphics and technology
One source says GTA 6 runs on a version of the RAGE engine built from the ground up for modern consoles, while GTA 5 was designed around PS3 and Xbox 360 hardware. Another notes that this older hardware limited GTA 5's world detail and scale.
Rockstar's footage shows the jump clearly:
- Strand-level hair physics instead of GTA 5's rigid hair
- Visible sweat on skin
- Much denser beach crowds with longer draw distances
- Highway traffic that stays visible far away instead of stopping or vanishing as in GTA 5
- Necklaces and hoop earrings with their own physics
Single-source details from the trailers include higher-poly characters with sharper fabric textures, denser and more varied night crowds, volumetric clouds, and a pink-red Vice City sunset palette instead of GTA 5's orange one.
One report says the game runs at 1440p and targets 30 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Rockstar hasn't confirmed this, so treat it as a single claim.
Radio and music
According to one outlet citing Rockstar, GTA 6 has the largest and most diverse radio line-up in the series, and the first six stations were unveiled on October 8, 2026. The same kind of source says the game adds on-demand podcasts and lets you listen to radio on foot through your phone and headphones. A 34-track Grand Theft Auto VI album is set for release on November 19, 2026, the same day as the game.
Online: GTA Online's future
Rockstar has not revealed specific details about a GTA 6 multiplayer mode. One report says GTA VI is single-player only, which would make the next GTA Online a standalone game. Another says Take-Two has hinted that GTA Online will continue alongside GTA 6. One source also says Rockstar has indicated post-launch expansions are planned.
Platforms, price and launch details
- Platforms: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S only, with no last-gen version. One report notes that no PC version or release window has been officially announced.
- Price: $79.99 for the Standard Edition. That's $10 above the usual $69.99 for current-gen AAA games, according to one report. Upgrading from Standard to Ultimate costs $20, per one source.
- Physical copies: The box contains a download code, not a disc.
- Pre-load: Starts November 12 for anyone who pre-orders, regardless of edition.
- Missing at launch (reported): One report says there's a Photo Mode but no full Director Mode. First-person mode is reportedly absent outside of aiming certain weapons, though this is unconfirmed.
