GTA 6 vs Red Dead Redemption 2: Every Feature Compared
Which Red Dead Redemption 2 systems made it into GTA 6? Criminal Profile, camp-style safehouses, Dead Eye, wildlife and more, sorted into confirmed vs. rumored.

The short answer
GTA 6 takes more from Red Dead Redemption 2 than any previous GTA took from another Rockstar game. Rockstar has confirmed a Criminal Profile system it describes as a new version of RDR2's Honor system, safehouses designed to feel like RDR2's camps, fishing, and a wide range of wildlife. Gameplay shown in the Extended Look adds a Dead Eye meter for Jason and RDR2-style slow-motion kill cams.
Several other RDR2 systems, including limited weapon carrying and greet/antagonize dialogue with NPCs, come from multiple sources but are still rumors. Rockstar has also reportedly said GTA 6 takes a very different approach from earlier GTAs while drawing heavily on RDR2's design.
The modern setting, cars and smartphones stay pure GTA. Here's how each system compares, three weeks before the November 19 launch.

Honor vs. Criminal Profile
This is the clearest direct descendant. Rockstar presents the Criminal Profile as a new version of RDR2's Honor system. According to one detailed breakdown of Rockstar's material, the difference is that your criminal behaviour shapes a profile instead of every action landing on an honorable/dishonorable scale.
The same source says consistently going beyond what a job needs, or doing unnecessary things, pushes your profile in a particular direction. Small everyday acts count too: throwing garbage in a trash can or feeding stray animals can affect it.
One rumor claims Jason and Lucia each have their own profile rating, tracked separately. One creator also thinks petting or scolding animals feeds into the profile, but that is their read of the footage, not something Rockstar has said.
Our take: RDR2 asked whether Arthur was a good man. GTA 6 seems to accept that you're a criminal and asks what kind: the clean professional or the one who causes a scene.
Camps vs. safehouses
Rockstar says safehouses in GTA 6 behave more like RDR2's camps, both in how much you can interact with them and in how much they feel like home. That is a big shift from GTA 5, where a safehouse was mostly a save point and a wardrobe.
The RDR2 parallel may go further. A rumor from two sources says each story chapter moves Jason and Lucia to a different safehouse or motel, much like the gang relocating camp between RDR2's chapters. Since GTA 6 is reported to use RDR2-style chapters for its story, that rumor fits.
Combat
Dead Eye and kill cams
The Extended Look showed Jason with a Dead Eye meter that drains while he slows time in a gunfight. Using it reveals lethal and non-lethal target areas on enemies, including the head, heart, hands and knees. A separate rumor says a Dead Eye-style vision mode will also highlight valuable loot in the environment.
Stylish or important kills by Jason or Lucia trigger slow-motion kill cams, as in RDR2.
Non-lethal options
As in the Red Dead games, you can reportedly shoot weapons out of enemies' hands or hit arms and legs to subdue people without killing them. A single-source rumor adds that you can carry unconscious or dead bodies on your shoulder.
Weapon carrying: the biggest change for GTA players
GTA V lets you pull any weapon at any time from a huge weapon wheel. RDR2 only lets you equip two primary weapons at once.
GTA 6 is rumored to land closer to RDR2: four independent sources say your on-foot carrying capacity is restricted and your wider arsenal sits in your personal vehicle's trunk. Another rumor mentions an equippable duffel bag that expands what you can carry beyond what fits on your body.
One report goes further and says Rockstar confirmed that greeting and provoking NPCs, weapon storage and other elements are coming to GTA for the first time. That claim comes from a single outlet, though, and the multi-source reporting still describes weapon storage and NPC dialogue as rumors. Treat them as likely, not confirmed.
One writer argues that limiting active weapons makes gunfights feel more authentic. That's opinion, but if the trunk rumor is right, your car becomes your armoury.
Pure GTA additions
GTA 6 includes dynamic shooting from the passenger seat of vehicles, which has no real RDR2 equivalent.
Wildlife and the outdoors
RDR2 had far more wildlife than GTA 5. GTA 6 keeps that up: Rockstar has shown iguanas, alligators, seagulls, cougars, raccoons, deer and sea turtles. One outlet noted the GTA 6 trailer showed a more diverse range of animals than RDR2 in its short runtime.
RDR2 habits that carry over:
- Fishing is an official open-world activity.
- Petting or scolding animals, impossible in GTA 5 but possible in RDR2, is reportedly back.
- Studying animals, in the wild or at the zoo, reportedly ticks them off a checklist the way RDR2 did.
- Binoculars are a usable tool.
GTA 6 also does something RDR2 never did. According to one source, it has explorable underwater environments with marine life and scuba divers, which RDR2 lacked.
NPCs and how the world reacts
Three sources say GTA 6 has an NPC dialogue mechanic similar to RDR2's greet and antagonize system. Remember that this is still a rumor, as covered above.
In RDR2, even a small robbery can have serious consequences. GTA 6's police are rumored to work closer to that than to GTA 5's tanks-and-helicopters escalation. Single-source rumors claim:
- Police can identify your face and licence plate when investigating crimes.
- The wanted system tracks faces, clothing, vehicles, and whether a crew split up.
- You can take bystanders hostage during robberies to delay an aggressive police response.
On world density, the 2022 leak reportedly documented over 1,000 random world events, and one rumor says Rockstar dedicated an entire studio to handcrafting NPC behaviours and routines. Both are unverified. Some people have said the level of detail could make killing NPCs feel uncomfortable, which was a common reaction to RDR2 too.
Story structure and protagonists
GTA 6 reportedly uses RDR2-style chapters instead of GTA 5's seamless mission flow. A single-source rumor puts the count at five main chapters.
Instead of one lead like Arthur, GTA 6 has two protagonists, Jason and Lucia. Reports suggest this could create a closer character dynamic than GTA 5's rotating trio. A rumor also describes a relationship meter between them that shifts with your choices and affects the story.
RDR2 sets a high bar here. One writer calls its story, acting and character work exceptional and thinks GTA 6 could rival it, but only with a great deal of effort. That's a judgement call, not something anyone can measure before launch.
Survival and upkeep
RDR2 makes you manage your horse, weapons and supplies, and cook and watch Arthur's diet daily to keep him performing. Some players found that repetitive over long sessions.
GTA 6 looks lighter on chores, based on leaks and rumors:
- RDR2's core system and consumable tonics were reportedly absent from the 2022 leaks.
- Medkits and painkiller bottles were visible in the leaked inventory UI.
- Protagonists' bodies are rumored to change with exercise and diet.
- You may need to monitor fuel and refuel your vehicles.
One outlet also spotted Lucia's fingernail length changing between scenes in Trailer 1, which could point to growth or cosmetic customization.
How it feels to play: pace, handling, animations
This is where the two games differ most. RDR2 encourages you to slow down, while GTA has always been frantic and action-heavy. In RDR2, Arthur handles sluggishly, aiming needs more precision, and picking up items plays long scripted animations. Many basic actions, like looting and upgrading gear, have animations that must finish before you can move on.
GTA 5 is the opposite. It's widely seen as Rockstar's best game for gunplay, and its driving is strong enough that it gets called a driving game in its own right.
The writers we drew on expect GTA 6 to land in between. Their view is that GTA 6 is unlikely to adopt RDR2's long animations wholesale because of the series' arcade identity, and that a balance between GTA V's speed and RDR2's slower actions would suit it. One small, reported example of the blend is that pulling out the phone uses RDR2's first-person inspection camera.
Graphics and tech
One outlet says the trailer's water and hair physics, volumetric clouds, flora and fauna resemble RDR2's but improve on them. Another reports that the clouds are fully volumetric and aircraft can fly through them.
Setting and travel
RDR2 is set in 1899, a slower and more predictable world than GTA 6's modern day. GTA 5 recreated a busy Los Angeles, while RDR2 leaned on open fields and landscapes. GTA 6's trailer showed dozens of familiar vehicles and characters filming chaos for social media.
The map is rumored to be about twice the size of GTA 5's. One writer speculates it could have more landmass than RDR2's. Neither claim is confirmed.
What probably won't carry over
- Horses. One writer doesn't expect rideable horses in GTA 6. That's speculation.
- Cores and tonics. They reportedly didn't appear in the 2022 leaks.
- Unlimited weapon wheel. If the trunk rumor holds, GTA's anything-anytime arsenal is gone.
