Preload date: November 12
Rockstar confirmed that digital pre-orders can be preloaded starting November 12, a full week before launch. According to several reports, preloads run through the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store, and boxed copies can preload too. One report says Rockstar stated the code inside the physical box supports preloading on the same day as digital copies.
The catch for boxed buyers is delivery. One source points out that digital buyers may finish downloading earlier, since a physical copy has to arrive before you can redeem its code. That's an opinion, not a rule, but if you're relying on a shipped box, the clock on your preload starts when the postman shows up.
Preloading is not early access
Preloading installs the game files ahead of time so you can jump in the moment it unlocks. It does not let you start the game or poke around before the November 19 unlock. Early access is also not listed among the Ultimate Edition's contents, according to one report.
One writer speculates that Rockstar opened preloads a week early to avoid millions of simultaneous downloads hammering PlayStation Network and Xbox servers.
Launch time: when does GTA 6 unlock?
The date is settled: November 19. The hour isn't, because Rockstar has not confirmed an exact launch time.
What the store data shows
One report describes the release as a staggered regional launch rather than a single global unlock. Regional PlayStation Store pages reportedly show the rollout starting in New Zealand at 11:00 UTC on November 18. The same source expects it to finish about 19 hours later in Mexico and Central America. Unlock timing is reportedly tied to your account's storefront region, not your console's clock settings, so fiddling with the system time won't get you in early.
Two outlets claim the game becomes playable at midnight on November 19. One source reads the rollout pattern as midnight local time, matching how GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 launched, though that's an interpretation rather than a confirmation.
The 5:00 AM UTC claim
Several sites claim a single global unlock at 5:00 AM UTC, and that is not confirmed. It also clashes with the regional rollout visible on PlayStation Store pages. Our read: store listings are more concrete evidence than unsourced claims, so a rolling midnight-local unlock is the likelier scenario. Both are still single-source reports, though, and Rockstar hasn't said a word about the hour.
Download size: what we know and what we don't
Rockstar has not announced a file size for GTA VI. Anything you see quoted as the official number is an estimate.
How Rockstar's recent games compare
| Game | Install size |
|---|---|
| GTA V (general figure) | About 110GB |
| GTA V on PS5 | Around 95GB |
| GTA V Enhanced on PC | 105GB free space required |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4 (2018 launch) | Roughly 105GB |
| GTA VI | Not announced |
The world is bigger this time. Rockstar North's Rob Nelson reportedly said in August that the GTA 6 map is roughly twice the size of GTA 5's, and the open world covers the entire fictional state of Leonida.
The estimates
One source expects the base game to land around 150GB to 200GB. Another suggests planning for up to 250GB of total storage. A day-one patch is also widely expected, though that's speculation too. Treat these as planning numbers, not facts.
About that 200GB leak
A leaked development build is rumored to exceed 200GB. The CyberLeek leaker reportedly used it to record leaked gameplay clips, and reportedly promised to release the full build if a meme coin hits a $30 million market cap. Development builds can include extra assets and tools that never ship in the retail game, and studios usually optimize textures before launch, so the final download may be much smaller. For context, a 192GB Rockstar archive that surfaced in September turned out to be mostly GTA 5 development material.
Don't download any of it. Fake CyberLeek builds between 113GB and 145GB have been circulating on torrent sites for weeks, and some have been linked to malware.
Will it fit on your console?
| Console | Usable storage |
|---|---|
| Launch PS5 (825GB advertised) | Roughly 667GB |
| Xbox Series S (512GB) | Around 364GB |
If the 150GB to 200GB estimates turn out right, a Series S owner would be handing over a big chunk of the drive to one game. One source warns players may need to clear significant space for the preload, and another notes that Series S expansion cards are expensive and may get pricier because of a shortage. The PlayStation Store lists the PS5 version as 'PS5 Pro Enhanced'.
How long the download could take
One estimate puts a 200GB download at 25 Mbps at roughly 18 to 22 hours in best-case conditions. Server load from millions of players will likely push real speeds below what your plan advertises. That's the real argument for starting on November 12 rather than launch night.
Physical copies: a code in a box
Boxed retail copies contain a digital download code, not a disc. The standard edition costs $79.99 whether you buy digital or physical.
If you're buying a code abroad, check the region. According to one report, PlayStation codes only redeem on accounts in the same region group as the country of purchase, and the UK is a separate group from mainland Europe. Xbox codes are reportedly not region-locked.
Will there ever be a disc?
Nothing official, and the reports conflict. Rockstar support emails reportedly said a physical copy would follow in the months after launch. Polish outlet PPE.pl, citing insider Graczdari, reports a disc edition in December 2026, which is a rumor. A source cited by The Hollywood Reporter claims Rockstar has no plans for a retail disc at all, also unconfirmed. One estimate suggests the game could span up to two 100GB Blu-ray XL discs if it ever ships on physical media. Until Rockstar says otherwise, the code-in-box version is the only physical option.
Pre-order extras to sort before you preload
Every pre-order placed before November 20 includes the Vintage Vice City Pack. It reportedly contains a 1955 Vapid Sanier sedan, a personal Shore Court garage near Ocean Beach, outfits and hairstyles for Jason and Lucia, and a Tommy Vercetti style tropical skin.
Digital pre-orders reportedly come with one free month of GTA+. GTA+ is a premium subscription tied to GTA Online, with monthly in-game cash, selected vehicles, discounts and rotating benefits. GTA 6 launches as a single-player-only game, with online functionality coming later, so set a reminder: the free month reportedly converts to a paid subscription if you don't cancel in time.
Standard vs. Ultimate
| Edition | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $79.99 | Base game |
| Ultimate | $100 | Premium vehicles, weapons and apparel across Jason's and Lucia's stories, per one report |
Standard owners can reportedly buy the Ultimate upgrade separately at any time, so there's no need to decide before the preload window.
Platforms
Rockstar has confirmed only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and no PC version has been announced. For reference, GTA V hit consoles in September 2013 and PC in April 2015, while Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in October 2018 and reached PC in November 2019.
