GTA 6 Online: Release Window, 32-Player Tests and What We Know
GTA 6 launches November 19 single-player only. What we know about GTA 6 Online: release window, 32-player tests, pricing, roleplay and GTA Online's future.

The short answer
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The official store description calls it a single-player experience. Rockstar has not confirmed any timeline for a GTA 6 multiplayer mode.
The best clue so far comes from Twitch CEO Dan Clancy. In an interview, he said Rockstar communicated plans to launch GTA VI's multiplayer component in the year after the game's release. The current GTA Online isn't going anywhere either: Take-Two confirmed that support continues after GTA VI launches.
On November 19 you get Jason, Lucia and the state of Leonida, but no GTA 6 online lobbies.
When will GTA 6 Online come out?
There is no official date. Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has acknowledged that GTA VI will include a new version of GTA Online, and GTA VI marketing still leaves GTA Online out entirely. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier said Rockstar isn't planning to discuss the new GTA Online "anytime soon." He did not say it had been delayed, and he gave no release date.
Here's every timing claim worth knowing, ranked by how much you should trust it:
| Source | Claim | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Dan Clancy, Twitch CEO (interview in Tokyo, Sept 17, 2026) | Multiplayer launches in the year after GTA VI's release | Strongest. A named executive, reported by six independent outlets |
| Reddit community | Early 2027 is the most likely window | Fan prediction |
| Leaker TheGhostOfHope (on X) | Online arrives within a month of release | Weak. No documentation, sourced to an unnamed "someone" |
| Paul Tassi, Forbes | One to two years after launch | Opinion |
Why Clancy's comment carries weight
Clancy wasn't guessing from the outside. He said Twitch spent considerable time talking with Rockstar about its plans and helping it think about how to engage content creators. Rockstar and Take-Two still haven't announced a 2027 date. "The year following release" could mean calendar 2027 or simply within 12 months of November 2026. Either reading points at 2027 (our analysis, not a confirmed date).
The "within a month" claim conflicts with that
TheGhostOfHope's claim that online arrives within a month of launch directly contradicts Clancy's account. TheGhostOfHope is known mainly as a Call of Duty leaker and has reportedly received a legal demand letter from Activision. The claim came with no documents and no corroboration. Clancy's statement is the far stronger source. Three weeks before launch, with a store page that says single-player, a one-month turnaround would also need an announcement that hasn't happened.
Why GTA 6 breaking from tradition is a big deal
Rockstar's last two open-world games launched their online modes within weeks:
| Game | Online mode | When it arrived |
|---|---|---|
| GTA V | GTA Online | October 1, 2013, about two weeks after GTA V |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Red Dead Online | Two weeks after RDR2, per the official record. One report says the beta went live about a month after |
| GTA VI | Not announced | Single-player only at launch |
The sources disagree on Red Dead Online. The two-week figure is better supported, with two independent official origins, while the one-month figure comes from a single report. Either way, both games added online within weeks, not a year.
A staggered launch for GTA 6 has been rumored for years. One outlet reports that GTA 6 launches single-player only and the multiplayer component is being held back. As of the latest reporting, no official footage, trailers or leaks of GTA 6's online mode had surfaced.
What happens to the current GTA Online?
It keeps running. Take-Two confirmed continued support after GTA VI's launch, and Rockstar has not announced any shutdown for November 19, 2026.
GTA Online is GTA V's multiplayer side. You build criminal enterprises, buy properties and vehicles, run missions and play with others. It started as a mode inside GTA V and has become a separate platform with its own launcher. A standalone version came to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2022.
It's still getting meaningful content. Rockstar released the Kortz Center Heist in July, and Take-Two said the A Safehouse in the Hills update delivered strong engagement and recurrent revenue gains.
The business reasons are obvious:
- GTA Online is one of Rockstar's biggest revenue sources.
- Take-Two made $5.20 billion from recurrent consumer spending in fiscal 2026.
- Recurrent spending across the GTA series rose 3% in Take-Two's latest quarter.
- GTA+ continued to perform strongly, and its subscriber count reportedly doubled year over year.
Rumors about a handover
RockstarIntel reported that GTA 6 will get a separate multiplayer experience that may eventually replace GTA Online, with the two running side by side for a while. Treat that as a rumor. Some fans think the July heist, the first July heist in six years, could start a storyline that leads into Vice City and Leonida. There's also a rumor that Valentina, a character seen in GTA Online materials, knows Jason and Lucia.
Will GTA 6 Online be free or sold separately?
Nobody outside Rockstar knows. Rockstar hasn't said whether multiplayer will come with the base game, be sold separately or use some other model.
- Sold separately: a single-source rumor.
- Free-to-play like GTA Online: speculation.
- Microtransactions: widely expected in the online mode, though that's also speculation.
- Single-player microtransactions: one report says GTA 6's story mode will have none.
For reference, the Standard Edition is reportedly $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition $99.99. Nothing ties either price to online access. Rockstar described the Ultimate Edition's exclusive stores as single-player content and didn't mention GTA Online. Digital pre-orders reportedly include one free month of GTA+.
Player count, lobbies and servers
This is where the hardest evidence sits, and it all comes from legal documents and patents.
- Documents filed with an employment tribunal in Edinburgh show Rockstar ran a test session for an upcoming title with 32 players in one online lobby.
- A former employee's Discord message in a case involving fired Rockstar staff mentions internal playtests with 32 users.
- One report links those 32-player tests directly to GTA 6. The tribunal documents themselves refer to "an upcoming title".
- Reporting on Rockstar's legal proceedings points to work on a successor to GTA Online.
| GTA Online today | What's surfaced for the next one | |
|---|---|---|
| Players per session | 30 | 32 in internal tests |
| Lobby handling | Standard sessions | Take-Two patent for seamless lobby transitions across map zones |
The patent is real: Take-Two patented a dynamic session management method for moving players between lobbies across map zones. Reports describe related Rockstar patents covering transfers between 32-player lobbies in different map regions and moving players into servers with higher NPC density. Those descriptions come from single sources. Patents also don't guarantee a feature ships, so read this as a sign of what Rockstar has been working on rather than a feature list.
Roleplay, FiveM and player-made content
Rockstar bought Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, in 2023. GTA roleplay is huge on PC, mostly through FiveM. According to one rumor, Rockstar had been building its own FiveM competitor before canceling it and buying Cfx.re instead.
The user-generated content rumors stack up:
- GTA 6 Online may put heavy emphasis on UGC and creation tools.
- Rockstar is said to be developing Project ROME, short for Rockstar Online Modding Engine.
- Rumored proprietary modding and roleplay tools would power UGC across GTA Online and future games.
- Leaks suggest a continued live-service model with looser rules on player-made content.
There are limits to what's known. There's no evidence the next GTA Online will use FiveM's dedicated-server model. Official private servers, built-in roleplay tools and custom rulesets are speculation.
Map and content rumors
- Bigger world: GTA 6 Online is rumored to include Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, plus better NPC behavior, persistent world events and a deeper economy.
- New cities after launch: one report says Rockstar plans to add entirely new cities to GTA 6 Online over time. That's a single source.
- Background: GTA 6 was reportedly codenamed Project Americas and originally meant to cover parts of North and South America before being scaled down.
Will GTA Online progress carry over?
Unknown. Nobody knows yet whether progress, characters or purchases will move from GTA Online to GTA 6 multiplayer.
The launch bonuses are built around the story. The pre-order Vintage Vice City Pack includes a 1955 Vapid Stanier and retro outfits and hairstyles for Jason and Lucia. It also adds the Shore Court garage near Ocean Beach, with a weapon locker and a fence for stolen goods. Our advice: don't buy the Ultimate Edition expecting online perks, since Rockstar described its extras as single-player.
What about PC?
Rockstar lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms and hasn't announced a PC date. VGC reported industry buzz that the PC version could arrive earlier than usual, which is still a rumor. One writer expects both the PC version and online multiplayer in 2027, but that's a personal guess. PC timing matters for online, because FiveM roleplay lives on PC.
