GTA 6 Storage: How Much Space You Need and Which SSD Works
GTA 6 is reportedly 210 GB on PS5. Will it fit on your console, can you play it from USB, and what SSD you need for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.

GTA 6 is reportedly a 210 GB download on PS5. That's nearly a third of a launch PS5's usable space, and Rockstar hasn't officially confirmed the size yet. With pre-loading reportedly opening on November 12, here's how much space you need on each console, how to check if you'll fit, and what to look for if you need more storage.
How big is GTA 6?
| Platform | Reported size | Status |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | 210 GB | Reported, from PlayStation Store data |
| Xbox Series X/S | Not known yet, expected to be similar | — |
| Official Rockstar figure | Not announced | — |
The 210 GB figure comes from an account on X that tracks PlayStation Store listings, and was picked up widely on October 27. You may also have seen claims of 676.7 GB or 750 GB: those aren't real. Our pre-load guide has the full download timeline.
Remember that a day-one patch could add to the total, so leave some room on top of 210 GB.
Will GTA 6 fit on your console?
Consoles don't let you use their full advertised storage, because the system takes a chunk. Here's roughly what's free for games on each model:
| Console | Advertised | Usable for games | 210 GB as share |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 (original, 825 GB) | 825 GB | about 667 GB | about 31% |
| PS5 Slim (1 TB) | 1 TB | about 848 GB | about 25% |
| PS5 Pro | 2 TB | about 1.89 TB | about 11% |
| Xbox Series X | 1 TB | about 802 GB | about 26% |
| Xbox Series S (512 GB) | 512 GB | about 364 GB | about 58% |
On an original PS5 or a Series S, GTA 6 will take a big bite out of your space. If you already have Call of Duty or a couple of other big games installed, you'll likely need to delete something, or add storage.
How to check your free space:
- PS5: Settings > Storage > Console Storage.
- Xbox: Settings > System > Storage devices.
Can I play GTA 6 from a USB drive?
No. On both consoles, current-gen games have to run from fast internal storage:
- PS5: "PlayStation 5 games can't be played directly from USB extended storage". You can keep PS5 games on a USB drive to save re-downloading, then copy them back to play. The drive needs SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster and 250 GB to 8 TB of space.
- Xbox Series X|S: games built for Series X|S can be stored on a USB drive but not played from it. To play, move them to the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card. USB drives need to be at least 128 GB and USB 3.0 or later.
So a USB drive is a good place to park other games while GTA 6 takes the internal SSD, but it won't run GTA 6 itself.
Adding an SSD to a PS5: what you need
Every PS5 model has a slot for an extra M.2 SSD, and games run from it just like the internal drive. Sony's official requirements:
- Type: M.2 NVMe SSD with PCIe Gen4 x4 support (Key M). SATA M.2 drives don't work.
- Speed: sequential read of 5,500 MB/s or faster is recommended.
- Capacity: 250 GB to 8 TB.
- Size: form factors 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110; up to 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick including the cooling.
- Cooling: a heatsink or heat transfer sheet is required. If the drive already has a heatsink, don't add another.
- Software: update your PS5's system software first. Drives that use Host Memory Buffer (HMB) aren't supported.
In practice, most PS5 buyers go for a 1 TB or 2 TB Gen4 drive that comes with a heatsink fitted, which avoids the extra step. Sony's support page has step-by-step fitting instructions for each model.
Adding storage to an Xbox Series X|S
Xbox uses a proprietary Storage Expansion Card that slots into a dedicated port on the back. It runs games at the same speed as the internal SSD and only works with Series X|S. A regular M.2 drive or USB SSD won't let you play Series X|S games.
Before November 12: a quick checklist
- Check your free space and aim for comfortably more than 210 GB.
- Move other games to USB if you have a drive, instead of deleting them.
- If you're buying an SSD, make sure it meets Sony's specs above, or get an official Xbox expansion card.
- Pre-load when it opens on November 12, so you can play the moment it unlocks.
Bought the boxed version? It's a download code, not a disc, so you'll need the full download either way. See is GTA 6 on disc?
