Earlier reports claimed a lead as high as 8 to 1, based on affiliate-link data, but Microsoft pushed back, saying that data didn't represent pre-orders and that Xbox has had "record orders". Microsoft hasn't given a number either.

What Take-Two has said

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has been careful not to give figures:

• In August, he called the level of pre-orders "unprecedented and astonishing" and described it as an "exceptional start".
• He also warned: "we haven't sold one unit yet. You can cancel a preorder".
• Take-Two kept its forecast of $8.0 to $8.2 billion in net bookings for the financial year that includes GTA 6's launch.
