Will GTA Online Shut Down When GTA 6 Comes Out?
Will GTA Online shut down when GTA 6 launches? What Take-Two has said, whether your character transfers, and when GTA 6 gets its own online mode.

No, GTA Online isn't shutting down when GTA 6 comes out. Take-Two has said it expects to keep supporting GTA Online after GTA 6 launches, and Rockstar has never announced an end date for it on any platform. Here's what happens to GTA Online and your progress, and what we know about GTA 6's own online mode.

What Take-Two has said
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said on the company's August 7 earnings call that "we expect to continue to support GTA Online going forward", and described the pace of updates as "pretty stable". That's no surprise: GTA Online is estimated to bring in somewhere between $400 million and $500 million a year. Take-Two has even pointed to running two versions of an online game side by side, as with NBA 2K Online in China, as a model.
GTA Online currently runs on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and none of those versions has a shutdown date. Its last big update was The Kortz Center Heist, released on July 14, 2026.
Will my GTA Online character transfer to GTA 6?
Nothing has been announced. Rockstar hasn't said whether your character, money, properties or cars will carry over to GTA 6's online mode. Until it does, assume you'll start fresh. So there's no sign that GTA$ or Shark Cards you buy now will carry over.
Does GTA 6 have an online mode?
Not at launch. Rockstar describes GTA 6 as "a single-player experience". Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said Rockstar plans to launch GTA 6's multiplayer in the year after release, but Rockstar hasn't confirmed a date. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier has reported that Rockstar isn't planning to talk about the new GTA Online any time soon. Our GTA 6 Online guide tracks every claim about it.
What happened to Red Dead Online is the warning sign
There's one precedent worth knowing. In 2022, Rockstar said it was moving development resources away from Red Dead Online towards the next Grand Theft Auto. Red Dead Online stayed online, but the big updates stopped. GTA Online makes far more money, and Take-Two says support continues, so a sudden stop seems unlikely. But once GTA 6 Online arrives, expect Rockstar's attention to move there.
GTA+ and GTA 6
GTA+, the GTA Online subscription, costs $7.99 a month and includes GTA$500,000 every month. Digital GTA 6 pre-orders reportedly come with a free month of it: see our pre-load guide for the details and when it starts charging.
