How Long Is GTA 6? Story Length and Hours to Beat
How long does it take to beat GTA 6? Rockstar's Rob Nelson said his playthrough took around 80 hours. Here's what that covers and how it compares to GTA 5.

GTA 6 is shaping up to be the longest story Rockstar has ever made. The best figure we have comes from inside the studio: Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told The New York Times that his latest playthrough took around 80 hours. Here's what that number covers, how it compares to earlier games, and how long you should expect to need.
The short answer
- Main story: around 80 hours, based on Nelson's playthrough.
- Story plus side content: likely 100 hours or more.
- For comparison: GTA 5's story takes about 32 hours, and GTA 4's about 27.
Where the 80-hour figure comes from
Nelson's comment appeared in The New York Times' preview of the game in late August. The playthrough itself took place in February. According to the coverage, it was almost entirely the main story, plus "some optional goals with narrative ramifications".
Two caveats are worth keeping in mind:
- It's one person's run, not an official runtime. Some headlines called it "confirmed", but Rockstar hasn't published a campaign length.
- Developers play differently. Nelson knows where every mission is. On the other hand, a first-time player will get lost, retry missions and stop to explore Leonida. Those two effects partly cancel out, so 80 hours is a reasonable estimate for a first story run.
How GTA 6 compares to earlier Rockstar games
| Game | Main story (approx.) |
|---|---|
| GTA 4 | 27 hours |
| GTA 5 | 32 hours |
| GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas combined | 64 hours |
| GTA 6 | About 80 hours |
If the figure holds, GTA 6's story alone would be roughly two and a half times longer than GTA 5's, and longer than the three PS2-era classics played back to back.
How long to 100%?
There's no reliable number yet. Nelson's run included only a few optional goals, and GTA 6 has a huge amount of side content on top of the story. Several outlets put a completionist run comfortably above 100 hours. That's an estimate, so treat it as a ballpark until people finish the game.
If you want an idea of what that side content looks like, our side activities guide lists everything confirmed so far.
A story told in chapters
Nelson has also said the game is built around chapters: "The game is set over chapters, which also help us figure out how the game is going to move". That's the same structure Red Dead Redemption 2 used, and it usually means natural stopping points and big shifts in setting or tone between parts of the story.
What about the 75-hour leak?
Back in August 2025, a post on X claimed the story would take about 75 hours across five chapters. GamingBible, which reported it, told readers to take it with a pinch of salt. In hindsight it landed close to Nelson's figure, but it was never verified, and the official chapter count still hasn't been revealed.
How long will it take you?
A rough guide, based on the 80-hour baseline:
- About 1 hour a day: around 2 to 3 months for the story.
- 2 to 3 hours a day: around 4 to 6 weeks.
- Launch-week marathon: even at 8 hours a day, you'd need about 10 days.
In other words, if you start on November 19 and play a couple of evenings a week, you'll still be in Leonida well into 2027. We'll update this page with real completion times once players start finishing the game.
