GTA 6 on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox: 30fps, 60fps and Resolution
Will GTA 6 run at 60fps? What Rockstar said about 30fps, Digital Foundry's 1440p analysis, what PS5 Pro Enhanced means and what we know about Xbox Series S.

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. If you're wondering which console runs it best, or whether to buy a PS5 Pro first, the honest answer is that nobody outside Rockstar has played the final build yet. What we do have is a clear statement on frame rate from Rockstar North, two detailed technical analyses of official footage, and Sony's own feature list. Here's what each of them actually says.
The short answer
- Frame rate: Rockstar North's Rob Nelson has said the console version currently runs at 30fps. A 60fps mode has not been confirmed or ruled out.
- Base PS5: Official footage runs at a native 1440p with a stable 30fps, according to Digital Foundry.
- PS5 Pro: The game is officially PS5 Pro Enhanced, but neither Sony nor Rockstar has said what that means.
- Xbox Series X|S: Rockstar hasn't shown a single frame of Xbox footage, so there's no hard data yet.
30fps on consoles: what Rockstar said
The clearest statement so far came from Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, during a hands-off demo in Edinburgh reported by Brazilian outlet Flow Games in late August. He said the console version runs at 30fps at its current stage of development. According to the same report, that applies to PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S alike.
When asked whether a 60fps option could arrive at launch or later, Nelson said he would need confirmation from the technical team. That's not a no, but it's not a yes either. Keep in mind this was relayed secondhand from a development build, so launch performance modes aren't final.
Our take: plan for 30fps. If a performance mode turns up at launch or in a patch, treat it as a bonus.
What Digital Foundry found in the footage
Digital Foundry, the most trusted name in console performance analysis, has broken down Rockstar's footage twice.
The Extended Look (August)
Looking at the extended gameplay footage captured on a base PS5, Digital Foundry measured a native 1440p resolution. It found no sign of dynamic resolution scaling, and the image appears to be upscaled to 4K with a simple spatial method rather than a temporal upscaler like FSR 2. The result is a slightly soft image with some shimmer on fine detail. Ray-traced reflections looked noisy and smeared in places.
The good news is the frame rate. Digital Foundry described a relatively stable, well-paced 30fps with only occasional single-frame drops. Given how much is happening on screen, it considers a 60fps console version "extremely unlikely" without cutting back the world itself.
The launch trailer (October)
The launch trailer, released on October 15, tells the same story: pixel counts put it at about 1440p inside a 4K frame on PS5. Digital Foundry saw no evidence of Sony's QSSR upscaler in the footage and estimated it would eat around 4ms of the 33ms available per frame at 30fps.
One welcome detail: the camera stutter that has followed Rockstar's RAGE engine for years wasn't visible, even in the slow pans and orbit shots that usually expose it. Digital Foundry can't say yet whether it's fixed in the final game or simply hidden by the edit.
PS5 vs PS5 Pro
The PlayStation Store listing carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced tag, which appeared when pre-orders opened in June. Sony's official feature list adds Tempest 3D Audio, fast SSD loading, DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and use of the controller speaker. Those features work on any PS5.
What the Pro tag actually delivers is still unknown. The most common expectation is that the Pro's extra GPU power goes toward a sharper, steadier image at the same 30fps rather than a higher frame rate. That fits the report that the current 30fps build includes the Pro, but it's still an educated guess.
Our take: don't buy a PS5 Pro just for GTA 6 before launch. Wait for Digital Foundry's day-one comparison. If the Pro mode turns out to be only a cleaner image, a base PS5 still gets you the full game.
Xbox Series X and Series S
Every piece of footage Rockstar has released was captured on PS5, and Digital Foundry hasn't had any Xbox footage to compare. The general expectation is that Series X will perform similarly to PS5. Series S, with less memory and a weaker GPU, is expected to run at a lower resolution, but there are no official numbers.
Storage matters more on Series S than anywhere else, because its drive is the smallest and Rockstar hasn't announced a file size yet. Our pre-load guide covers the estimates and how to prepare.
Which console should you play on?
| PS5 | PS5 Pro | Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frame rate | 30fps | 30fps per current build | 30fps per current build | 30fps per current build |
| Resolution | Native 1440p in footage | Enhanced, details unknown | No footage yet | Expected lower |
| Official extras | DualSense features | PS5 Pro Enhanced tag | None announced | None announced |
If you already own one of these consoles, play GTA 6 on it. The differences we know about are small, and the biggest open question, a 60fps mode, would affect every platform. We'll update this page with launch-day performance analysis as soon as it's out.
